How Do I Know If I Need a New Dental Crown?
On average, porcelain dental crowns can last anywhere between 5-15 years depending on a number of factors. This includes your oral hygiene practices, your personal lifestyle choices, and the location of the crown. However, at one point or another the time will come where you’ll need to get a replacement. Your dentist shares some signs that you may be needing a new dental crown in Allentown.
Damaged Crown
There are several different types of dental crowns out there, and over time they tend to become stronger and more aesthetically pleasing. Porcelain and fused-to-metal crowns have the chance of cracking or chipping. If this happens to you, talk to your dentist. Depending on the damage, he may be able to fix it, or you may need a new dental crown entirely.
Crown Wear and Tear
Over time, you may notice that your crown has become worn down. While this can be an indication of the age, it can also be a sign of issues like bruxism or poor oral hygiene. Ask your dentist and he will be able to determine the underlying cause of the wear and tear, and whether or not you will need to have your crown replaced.
Pain or Swelling
You shouldn’t feel any pain or discomfort surrounding a crown. If you do, you should see your dentist as soon as you can. This could be a sign that it’s placed too high on the tooth, damaged, or old. Your dentist can determine if you need a new crown or if it can be readjusted or fixed.
Receding Gumline
Around the dental crown, you are more likely to have increased bacteria growth than around a natural tooth. This can increase your risk for periodontal disease. Using good oral hygiene and antibacterial mouthwash can help prevent gum complications. See your dentist if you notice that you have a receding gumline. It could also be indicating that the crown isn’t placed properly, or you need a new one.
Your Crown is Over a Decade Old
The lifespan of your crown depends on many different factors, but if it is over 10 years old, you should definitely be keeping an eye on it. At this point, it should be regularly checked by your dentist, even if there doesn’t appear to be any damage. He will be able to determine when a replacement crown is needed.
Cosmetic Concerns
The function of your crown is important, but so is the appearance. Many people with fused-to-metal crowns may notice a dark line along their teeth as a result of the metal showing through. Even though this is not harmful, it may cause cosmetic concern. In this case, your dentist can replace it.
No matter what worries you have regarding your crowns, talk to your dentist. He will be able to answer questions and help you get to the root of any problems you are having. This way, you can go back to living your busy life with peace of mind.
